“We Act in an Understanding of Win-Win, not Colonialism”

Holding a joint press conference with President Rajaonarimampianina of Madagascar, President Erdoğan said: “I believe our entrepreneurs and investors will do a lot of things in Madagascar and they will act on a basis of win-win, not in an understanding of colonialism, because there has never been such an understanding in our culture or values throughout our history.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a joint press conference with President Hery Rajaonarimampianina of Madagascar at Iavoloha Palace in Antananarivo, the last stop of his East Africa tour to Tanzania, Mozambique and Madagascar.

“WE ATTACH IMPORTANCE TO DEVELOPING OUR BILATERAL RELATIONS WITH MADAGASCAR”

Thanking President Rajaonarimampianina for the hospitality, extended to him and his delegation, President Erdoğan said: “I would like to take this occasion to express my thanks for the National Order, which will be presented to me. I hope it will be the symbol of the friendship between our two countries.”

“Madagascar is among the countries we attach importance to developing our bilateral relations with. During my visit, we discussed in detail what can be done in defense, education, agriculture, industry, energy as well as infrastructure and superstructure. Also, we have come to Madagascar with nearly 150 businessmen. I believe our entrepreneurs and investors will do a lot of things in Madagascar and they will act on a basis of win-win, not in an understanding of colonialism, because there has never been such an understanding in our culture or values throughout our history.”

“WE HAVE SHOWN THAT WE ARE TRUE FRIENDS OF THE MALAGASY PEOPLE”

“The relations between Turkey and Madagascar have progressed significantly in the areas of politics, economy and trade after Turkish embassy was opened in 2010 and the Turkish Airlines began to run flights between Istanbul and Antananarivo in 2015,” President Erdoğan underlined.

“We opened our embassy in a period during which Madagascar was isolated by the international community and was going through difficult times,” President Erdoğan said, and added: “With the humanitarian aid we have provided, we have shown that we are true friends of the Malagasy people and we always stand beside them to the extent of our means. I am deeply pleased that we have won the hearts and appreciation of the Malagasy people as well as a place in their mind with our understanding of solidarity and friendship.”

“A COUNTRY CAN OVERCOME ANY OBSTACLE WHEN THEY ARE ONE AND UNITED”

President Erdoğan congratulated President Rajaonarimampianina over his efforts for political and economic stability in Madagascar.

“I believe Madagascar will continue to develop in all areas under the visionary leadership of President Rajaonarimampianina,” President Erdoğan said, and further stated: “Undoubtedly, what matters here is to gather around the same goal and ideal. As our Malagasy friends say: ‘Firesankin no er’. In other words, unity is power. A country can overcome any obstacle when they are one and united.

“I BELIEVE OUR TRADE VOLUME WILL RISE WITH TURKISH AIRLINE’S FLIGHTS”

“During our talks today, President Rajaonarimampianina and I discussed our bilateral relations and regional developments,” President Erdoğan said. “We also had a chance to evaluate our projects and goals for the future. We will meet with businesspeople in a little while. We see that our commercial relations with Madagascar have gained momentum since our embassy was opened. Our trade volume, which was merely $12 million in 2005, has risen up to $60 million. This figure is far from the actual potential of our two countries. We should increase it. I and my dear friend have agreed on this matter. I believe our trade volume will rise further with the Turkish Airline’s flights,” the President added.

“MADAGASCAR HAS A GREAT POTENTIAL WITH ITS NATURAL RESOURCES”

“I have been informed of the National Development Project for 2015-2020, put forward by President Rajaonarimampianina during our talks,” President Erdoğan said. “I am sure Turkish entrepreneurs will be interested in the projects in the National Development Plan. I believe there are significant opportunities between the two countries in the areas of tourism, mining, agriculture, marine products and construction. On my visit, I am accompanied by many businessmen from different sectors with serious know-how. My dear friend and I will attend Turkey-Madagascar Business Forum today, which will bring together our investors. Madagascar has a great potential with its natural underground richness, arable lands, water resources and touristic treasures. Especially with its water resources, hydroelectric power plants can be built to meet Madagascar’s energy need. Among the entrepreneurs, accompanying me today, there are very powerful people in this area. We should join forces and put it into action,” the President stated.

“I HAVE VOICED OUR EXPECTATIONS ABOUT FETO’S ELIMINATION”

“During our meeting with President Rajaonarimampianina, we also have discussed the fight against the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), which attempted a coup on the night of July 15,” President Erdoğan said, and added: “I have shared information and documents with my dear friend about this structure, which has built a network in many countries in Africa under the guise of service and education. I have voiced our expectations about FETO’s elimination. This structure has infiltrated all institutions of the state in 40 years, including our military and police force, and it attempted a coup on the night of July 15. They targeted me and our Prime Minister. They attempted to murder our own citizens with F16s, helicopters, tanks, artillery and modern weapons. They martyred 248 citizens and wounded 2193. They currently continue their operations in 170 points across the world. We tell our friends: ‘We have been hit by them. You do not get hit by them. We have established the Maarif Foundation. If your Ministry of Education works with our foundation, we will save the Malagasy people, the Malagasy youth from the coup plotters ruthless actions.’ We are ready to give the necessary support through the Maarif Foundation, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), Türkiye Scholarships and NGOs.”

President Erdoğan said: “I would like to host President Rajaonarimampianina in Turkey as soon as possible on an official visit.”

PRESIDENT RAJAONARIMAMPIANINA OF MADAGASCAR: “WE ARE WITH TURKEY IN ITS FIGHT AGAINST ITS ENEMIES”

In his statement, President Rajaonarimampianina underscored that the large delegation accompanying President Erdoğan showed the importance Turkey attached to the visit. “The relations between Turkey and Madagascar have further improved after Turkish embassy was opened in Antananarivo and the Turkish Airlines began to run direct flights,” President Rajaonarimampianina said, and added: “President Erdoğan’s presence here further strengthens our bilateral relations. We have taken a tour d’horizon of the international arena and Africa. We are aware that there cannot be social and economic development without peace and safety in the world.”

Underscoring the importance they attach to “win-win” policy in international relations, President Rajaonarimampianina said: “We can implement the build-operate-and-transfer model in our country. We are witnessing nice examples of this model in Turkey.” “We have heard what happened in Turkey recently. The Malagasy people stand beside the Turkish people. We are with you in your fight against your enemies,” President Rajaonarimampianina said. In answer to a question whether FETO’s schools would be closed down in Madagascar, President Rajaonarimampianina said: “We should fight against terror anywhere. Even if we are not directly affected by terror, we should still fight and we should do it wisely.”
