NSC Emphasizes the Importance of Preserving Iraq’s Political Unity and Territorial Integrity

The statement issued following the National Security Council (NSC) meeting, held at the Presidential Complex under the chairmanship of President Erdoğan, specified “our sensitivity and expectation that the operation carried out in Kirkuk by the Central Iraqi Government be also aimed at restoring the city’s demographic structure, which has recently been tried to be degenerated, in line with it historical depth.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan chaired the National Security Council meeting at the Presidential Complex. A written statement was released following the meeting.

The NSC has been briefed on the operation the Turkish Armed Forces units have been conducting in Idlib within the scope of the de-escalation task force, the statement noted, and continued: “It has been assessed that our units that have been deployed with the goal of establishing permanent peace in Syria within the framework of the Astana agreement have been successfully fulfilling their mission in the Idlib de-escalation zone.”

MEASURES AGAINST THE IKRG’S ILLEGITIMATE REFERENDUM

Pointing out that the steps taken following the illegitimate referendum held by the IKRG have been evaluated and that the additional measures planned to be implemented have been discussed, the statement underscored: “The NSC has recommended the government that it close the Turkish airspace to the IKRG and that the process for the Central Iraqi Government to take over the İbrahim Khalil border crossing be launched. Within this context, the steps taken by the Central Iraqi Government, particularly in Kirkuk, in order to establish constitutional sovereignty across the country have been assessed, and the importance we attach to the preservation of Iraq’s political unity and territorial integrity has been emphasized once again. Our sensitivity and expectation that the operation carried out in Kirkuk by the Central Iraqi Government be also aimed at restoring the city’s demographic structure, which has recently been tried to be degenerated, in line with it historical depth has particularly been stressed.”

EXTENDING STATE OF EMERGENCY ADVISED

The statement further read: “The state of emergency, implemented across the country within the scope of the fight against all terrorist organizations, the FETO/PSS, PKK/PYD-YPG, DAESH in particular, has been assessed; and it has been decided to advise to extend the state of emergency in order to ensure the continuation of the measures, aimed at protecting our democracy, the rule of law and our citizens’ rights and freedoms.”
