The following is His Excellency President Abdullah Gül’s letter sent to the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC), Dr. Derviş Eroğlu via the Secretary General of the Presidency, Mustafa İsen:

“Mr. President,

I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Your Excellency and the people of KKTC on the occasion of the 36th Anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation that ultimately eliminated the attempt targeting the very rights, freedom and existence of the Turkish Cypriots as the co-owners of the island.

The Turkish Cypriots have proved that even during the harshest times they will not give up their legal rights, that their existence cannot be terminated and that they will not concede to a lesser level than they deserve on the stage of history. Moreover, they, though being made to be exposed to unfair constraints, have always demonstrated that they have the maturity not to swerve from their fidelity to democracy, peace, reconciliation and fairness.

They have defended their legal rights in the spirit of union and solidarity on this basis and displayed tireless efforts genuinely with a constructive approach for a permanent and comprehensive resolution that will make stability and cooperation dominate throughout the island. This is the very aim of the UN negotiations that have been in progress for the last two years between the two equal sides in the island.

Our wish is that the negotiation process continuing under the leadership of Your Excellency would culminate in a resolution towards the aim put forth by the UN Secretary General before the end of the year 2010.

A comprehensive resolution means security, stability, cooperation and prosperity not only on the island but also in the whole of the Eastern Mediterranean. As the motherland, Turkey's effective and actual guarantee will be the assurance for this atmosphere of peace and stability as a whole.

On the other hand, naturally all these efforts can only reach an achievement when they can be responded to with the same intimacy and constructiveness by the Greek Cypriots as well. A resolution can be reached. However, it is obvious that the negotiations cannot continue forever. It is the responsibility of the relevant sides not to leave the Turkish Cypriots’ sincerity and constructive suggestions towards a resolution unreturned and not to waste this opportunity as was the case in 2004.

You can be confident that Turkey, according to her promise and historic responsibilities, is always and under any circumstances with the Turkish Cypriots.

I hereby once again congratulate the Turkish Cypriots on their Peace and Freedom Festival with my heartfelt feelings on behalf of myself and the Turkish nation. I also remember our martyrs sacrificing their souls during this freedom struggle and our wounded veterans with gratitude and tribute and reiterate my good wishes for the continuation of the prosperity and happiness of our Turkish Cypriot brothers and sisters.”
