President Abdullah Gül's message to the Governor of Konya, Aydın Nezih Doğan on the international celebration of the 736th Anniversary of Mevlana's Reunion with the Beloved [which is how he termed his death]:
"It is with deep regret that I am unable to attend the celebration ceremonies of the 736th Anniversary of the death of Mevlana, the great Turkish-Islamic mystic, poet and thinker, due to my schedule abroad.
Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi is still spreading hope and light to humanity with his philosophy of fraternity, peace and tolerance which transcends the centuries. It is because of this universal and timeless quality that the Masnavi'l Ma'navi is translated into many foreign languages and read widely. Many people visit our country each year to see the region in which he lived and refined his philosophy.
Today, more than ever, the world needs the messages of such thinkers . Mevlana, who never excluded those with different beliefs and ideas, who tried to reveal the goodness and love within humanity and who sought oneness in the multitude, built bridges between the hearts of people and lay the foundations of the road to peace.
Anyone who understands Mevlana's message will enjoy only love, friendship and unity, and will avoid evil.
History has laid at our door the responsibility of spreading our gift of Mevlana's philosophy to the whole world. Therefore, these celebrations where so many people from so many different cultures and countries reunite every year have a special mission.
I urge everyone to take heed of Mevlana's message and to strive to understand his philosophy, which is one that embraces all humanity. If we can do this and pass his message down through the generations, we will open the door to a more beautiful future.
I commemorate Mevlana with love and respect on the 736th Anniversary of his Reunion with the Beloved, and send my greetings to those attending the ceremonies."
