Starting the President’s Cup International Sailing Regatta, President Gül called for environmental awareness, recalling the Independent, a vessel which had an accident in the Istanbul Strait.
During his speech at the ceremony for the 21st President’s Cup International Sailing Regatta held by the Istanbul Sailing Club (IYK) at Cape Fenerbahçe, the President proclaimed the IYK to be almost the same age as the Republic itself which has won Turkey many Olympiad medals so far.
“SPORT MAKES YOUTH DISCIPLINED AND MORE PEACEFUL”
Although being surrounded by the sea on three sides, the President maintained, Turkey has not coalesced with it. At this point, the IYK has a responsibility, he said, underlining the importance of promoting of all branches of sport. “Sporting makes youth disciplined and more peaceful,” argued the President.
PRESIDENTIAL AEGIS OF SCIENCE, CULTURE AND SPORTS
President Gül later referred to the scientific activities, cultural studies and the branches of sports under his aegis, arguing that after he had taken the Presidential Cycling Tour under his patronage, the interest in this sport was enhanced considerably all over the country and in the international arena, which he said also contributed to the promotion of the country. He further hoped that the International Sailing Race under his auspices would contribute to the promotion of all the beauties of Istanbul.
The President also called on the NGOs, environmental institutions and the media to be more sensitive about the efforts to keep tankers from the Istanbul Strait as much as possible, drawing attention to the potential disasters they could cause.
At the end of his speech, he offered his thanks to the IYK administration and wished them success. Afterwards, he launched the race by sounding the horn three times.
