President Abdullah Gül paid a visit to Finland between October 7 and 9 at the invitation of the Finnish President Tarja Halonen.
Mr. Gül was greeted by Mrs. Halonen with an official welcoming ceremony on Wednesday, October 8. The delegations of both countries, headed by their respective presidents, had talks after which they held a joint press conference.
Mr. Gül attended a lunch hosted by the Helsinki City Council in his honour and a Turkish/Finnish Business Council meeting, and then he met the Speaker of the Finnish Parliament Sauli Niinistö and received the Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen.
Mr. Gül also visited the Tatarian Turks’ Community Centre, where he delivered a speech. Mr. Gül attended a dinner hosted by Mrs. Halonen in his honour.
On Thursday, October 9, Mr. Gül visited the Heroes’ Memorial and laid a wreath. He then travelled to Jyväskylä, where he attended a lunch given in his honour by the city council.
Mr. Gül also visited Alvar Aalto Museum and Jyväskylä University. Mr. Gül attended the Martti Ahtisaari Conference, where he delivered a speech, before flying on to Estonia on the same day.
