President Abdullah Gül travelled to the USA to attend the 63rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly between September 20 and 29.
On Monday, September 22, Mr. Gül attended a high level meeting on Africa's development needs in New York and delivered a speech during the meeting. On Tuesday, September 23, Mr. Gül gave a speech at the opening session of the UN General Assembly and attended the briefing on Iraq given by the US and Iraqi presidents.
On Wednesday, September 24, Mr. Gül attended the World Leadership Forum during which the Foreign Policy Association (FPA) awarded him the FPA Medal for his efforts towards a peace settlement in the Middle East. Mr. Gül attended the opening reception of the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting at the Museum of Modern Arts (MoMA) in New York and met the former US President Bill Clinton.
On Thursday, September 25, Mr. Gül attended the opening session of the High Level Meeting on "Millennium Development Goals" (MDGs) and the Round Table on Poverty and Hunger, and he delivered a speech at a meeting of the American Turkish Society in New York. Mr. Gül attended the third annual friendship dinner hosted by the Turkish Cultural Centre at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel as a guest of honour where he delivered a speech.
On September 26, Mr. Gül visited the New York Stock Exchange and signed the visitor's book, and attended the meeting organised by the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU).
On September 27, Mr. Gül held a press conference for Turkish reporters. Then Mr. Gül received representatives of the Turkish community and Meskhetian (Ahiska) Turks.
Following his talks, Mr. Gül returned to Ankara on September 29. During his programme in New York, Mr. Gül had numerous bilateral talks with the various heads of state and government attending the UN General Assembly and conveyed Turkey's request for their support for the country's candidacy for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council.
