NSC Recommends Government to Declare State of Emergency

A written statement issued following the meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) read that the NSC recommended the government to declare state of emergency under Article 120 of the Constitution with the purpose of effectively implementing the measures that aim to safeguard citizens’ rights and freedoms and our democracy’s rule of law principle.

The National Security Council convened under the chairmanship of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the Presidential Complex on 20 July 2016.

The Secretariat of the National Security Council issued a written statement following the meeting of the Council of Ministers, which also convened at the Presidential Complex right after the meeting of the National Security Council.

Noting that the treason gang, named the Gulenist Terrorist Organization, launched an armed coup attempt on 15 July 2016 through its members within the Turkish Armed Forces, the statement read that the organization in question aimed to seize the control of the nation and the state by means of the civil-society organizations, media outlets, trade organizations, public officials and educational institutions, which it had taken under its influence starting from its foundation.

“OUR NATION DIDN’T LEAVE THE SQUARES TO THE GANG-MEMBER TERRORISTS AND TRAITORS”

“This attempt of the Gulenist Terrorist Organization, which tried to seize control of the country by mobilizing bloodthirsty cruel terrorists in uniforms embedded in the Turkish Armed Forces, has failed thanks to the sagacity, courage and self-sacrifice of our nation,” the statement underlined and it continued: “In this historic process, our political parties, civil-society organizations, media outlets and our august nation, who defended the national will and democracy at the cost of their lives, united against the coup attempt irrespective of their differences of opinion, and didn’t leave the squares to the gang-member terrorists and traitors. Our state, joining forces with the nation, quelled the armed coup attempt before evening of the following day and took the situation under control.”

“THE RECOMMENDATION OF STATE OF EMERGENCE IS AIMED AT ELIMINATING THREATS AGAINST RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS”

The statement, in which the Council members expressed their wishes for Allah’s mercy upon all martyred civilians, police officers, and soldiers as well as for a speedy recovery to the veterans, concluded as follows: “Our Council once again reaffirmed its commitment to democracy, fundamental rights and freedoms, and the rule of law. The steps that should be taken henceforth were evaluated in detail. In this regard, the Council decided to recommend the government to declare state of emergency under Article 120 of the Constitution with the purpose of effectively implementing the measures that aim to safeguard citizens’ rights and freedoms and our democracy’s rule of law principle. This recommendation is simply and purely aimed at facilitating the works to be done to eliminate threats against rights and freedoms.”

Respectfully announced to the public.
